Ernst Gouws & Co... It all began 40 years ago - or rather in 1694 when the French Huguenots came to South Africa and the first Gouws (then called Gauché) of the Ernst Gouws and Co family began what would be an epic journey into South African wines.

Many generations later, Ernst and his family boast a proud history of family winemaking. This Stellenbosch family has become synonymous with producing quality South African wines, rich in heritage and tradition and driven by a profound passion for wine and family values.

In 1975, a dapper and enthusiastic Ernst traveled to Europe on his father’s instructions not to return to South Africa unless he had mastered the art of winemaking. It was during this voyage of discovery and learning in France and Germany that he missed his childhood sweetheart and invited her to visit. After falling madly in love with Gwenda, they decided to marry then and there.

Forty years, three children and many Gouws grandchildren later, Ernst and Gwenda run the Gouws family wine

business – Ernst as winemaker and producer; Gwenda as general manager. All three their children share their passion for wine and followed suit.

Ezanne, a qualified winemaker, takes care of the export sales and marketing of the family flagship wines, whilst Ernst Jnr, also a qualified winemaker is in charge of the national distribution and The 19th wines.

Inke complements the family’s deep roots in the industry with Burgundy-based wine studies and experience in wine marketing at some of France’s premier champagne houses. The fifth generation growing up in the business, currently in babyshoes, already form part of this nurturing and wholesome Gouws tradition.

And so the circle of life finds true meaning in the lives of the Gouws family - timeless wines representing unity and infinitude, perfectly symbolized by their circular copper-foiled labels bearing the confident and elegantly crafted family name of Ernst Gouws & Co.

Welcome to our world of quality wines.
