ERNST GOUWS & CO CHENIN BLANC

Winemaker’s Notes:

Light and fresh, with abundant tropical flavours.

Whiffs of paw-paw, granadilla, yellow- and green apples, and peaches dominate the aromatic spectrum. The crunchy acidity and slight textural mouthfeel combine with the vibrant tropical fruit characters to result in a fresh, more-ish, typical Stellenbosch style of Chenin Blanc. Lingering flavours of cling peach and pineapple on the finish.

Chef’s Notes:

Serve at ±10 degrees Celsius. Light and tasty, this is an ideal refreshing wine for those long al fresco lunches during the warm summer months! A perfect accompaniment to a wide array of vegetable dishes, salads and fresh seafood.

ERNST GOUWS & CO PINOTAGE

Winemaker’s Notes:

A crowd-pleaser with the warmth of cloves and sweet anise.

It has a bold ruby colour, and complimentary aromas of wild bramble, ripe plums, exotic spices, baked Christmas cake and dried pears. The exotic spice profile is reminiscent of a trip to a North African open-air market. The robust, yet ripe tannins, bolster the structure without the addition of any rough edges. True to its varietal character, the wine ends with lingering flavours of sweetish red berry fruit compote.

Chef’s Notes:

Serve at ±18 degrees Celsius. The typical fruit sweetness on the finish of Pinotage makes it an ideal partner for spicy Asian-style dishes – think aromatic curries, biryani or peppered squid served with wasabi. The plush red fruit flavours will compliment bobotie, ratatouille, and oxtail.

ERNST GOUWS & CO MERLOT

Winemaker’s Notes:

Smooth and balanced, with aromas of dark cherries and chocolate. The entry on the palate is smooth, with a beautifully balanced fruit / acid component. The tannins are muscular yet ripe, adding enough structure to support the luscious fruit elements. A savoury whiplash on the finish is further complimented by crunchy, fresh cherry notes.

Chef’s Notes:

Serve at ±18 degrees Celsius. Baked pasta dishes like lasagne and cannelloni as well as pastas with tomato-based sauces. It will also complement grilled swordfish or tuna, as well as lamb burgers.

ERNST GOUWS & CO PINOT NOIR

Winemaker’s Notes:

The translucent ruby colour of this wine is typical of the variety. Subtle aromas of fresh raspberries, cherries and tilled earth combine with a hint of baking spice. The palate is elegant, with a delicate and silky tannin structure.  The wine is beautifully balanced with lingering flavours of tobacco and wild mushrooms on the finish.

Chef’s Notes:

Serve at ±15 degrees Celsius.

The delicate nature of this wine is a perfect match for smoked trout or salmon. Also pairs well with charcuterie, ham and other cold meats served with patés and terrines.

ERNST GOUWS & CO FAMILY RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Winemaker’s Notes:

A classic Cabernet Sauvignon, with a beautiful brooding, purple-black appearance. The nose is filled with upfront aromas of stewed dark fruits, bouquet garni, cedar wood, graphite shavings and crushed tomato leaves. The palate is intense and powerful, yet poised and finely balanced.

Chef’s Notes:

Serve at ±18 degrees Celsius. The winemaker’s skilled hand combined with healthy, ripe fruit to create a truly satisfying and elegant wine, fit for those special occasions and celebrations. The earthy, slightly herbal notes will pair beautifully with roasted beet salad with walnuts. Try it with roasted duck breast with porcini mushrooms or barbequed lamb ribs.

ERNST GOUWS & CO CHARDONNAY

Winemaker’s Notes:

Textured and creamy, with ripe orange citrus flavours. Ripe South African citrus aromas of tangerine, orange and kumquat are further complimented by notes of pineapple and white peaches. An unwooded style of Chardonnay, displaying elegance and finesse, and a creamy mouthfeel.

Chef’s Notes:

Serve at ±12 degrees Celsius. The creamy mid-palate and un-oaked character makes this wine the ideal companion for mild green Thai curries, creamy mussels and shellfish. Also goes well with subtly flavoured roast chicken and oven roasted vegetables.

ERNST GOUWS & CO SHIRAZ

Winemaker’s Notes:

Evocative and beautifully rounded with a palate of ripe cherry, rose petal and plums. Underlying notes of cured meats further enhance the nose. The palate is laced with flavours of ripe plums, black cherries and fresh raspberries. The plush fruit character of this wine should, with age and careful cellaring, evolve into beautiful tertiary notes of leather, allspice, dark fruits and smoked charcuterie.

Chef’s Notes:

Serve at ±18 degrees Celsius. The ideal partner for beef, and the lively acidity of this wine will cut through the fat of marbled steak cuts like rib-eye (preferably peppered), prime rib, New York strip and Wagyu beef. Also try it with slow cooked beef and tomato stew, as well as spare ribs.
